This article presents basic rules for entering names in genealogy. There is a separate article about place name standardisation basics, and there are several articles about the mispractice of using fantasy names, see the links at the end.
This article covers the basics, with a implicit focus on Western genealogy. It does not discuss farm names and patronyms, spelling variations or name changes. There is nothing in here about local naming rules or conventions, and nothing about non-Western names or alphabets either. This article is about just the basics; a bunch of simple, straightforward rules that all derive from the same, single general principle.
