Vermelding
Edmore, N.D. and Countryside : Tales Beyond "No Man's Land," 1901-2001 - Albert and Sarah (Van Dyke) Vander Heiden Holland was the homeland of the Vander Heidens. Albert was born March 11, 1868, to Arie and Aaltje (De Witt) Vander Heiden. Albert and his older brother Arie remained in Holland when the rest of the family left for the United States in March of 1888. The family first settled in Orange City, Iowa, and then Pella, Iowa, where Albert joined them. Sarah was born February 26, 1876, at Rotterdam, Holland, to Abram and Klasina (Clara) (Van Waardhuizen) Van Dyke. Her family arrived in Pella in 1888. Albert and Sarah were married at Pella on February 23, 1899. In March of 1904, they purchased a farm near Edmore in Section 11 of Cato Township. The family, Albert, Sarah, and three daughters, lived in a small house adjacent to the property while a larger house was constructed on their farm. Seven more children were born to them. Alice, born April 4, 1900, at Pella, married Andrew Zessin. She died April 19,1998, and is buried at Milton-Freewater, Ore. Irene was born December 1, 1901 at Orange City, Iowa. She married Leon Collins. Irene died August 5, 1992, and is buried at Mt. Vernon, Wash. Marie married Frank Schledorn. (See their story) Dora, born February 21, 1906, married Ray Cline. She graduated from Edmore High School in 1923 and currently resides at Coeur-d-Alene, Idaho. Eva was born November 13, 1907, and married Art Charon (See). They make their home in Devils Lake. Margaret, born December 4, 1909, married Lloyd Nelson and they reside in Devils Lake. Lena was born November 23, 1911. She died from April 26, 1928, from spinal meningitis. Elsie was born February 24, 1914. She married Harlan Timboe. Albert Jr. was born February 23, 1916. He married Nellie Shipman. He passed away January 8, 1989. Sarah, born January 3,1920, married John Ronnigen and resides at Paso Robles, Calif. The children all attended Cato School #2 which was 3/4 of a mile from their home as the "crow flies", but in the spring, due to water in the lowlands, they had to walk the three miles on the road. The family attended church services in the school conducted by Rev. Chester, the Methodist minister from Edmore. The girls were all decked out in their homemade, good, white, cotton dresses. In the afternoon, the family and friends would gather around the organ, singing while Alice played. Later, everyone was treated to either chocolate or white cake. Monday was a busy wash day for Sarah. She had all those white dresses to wash and then to iron them with heavy, flat irons heated on the coal stove. Since there was only one boy in the family, the girls helped with the outside farm work, including milking the cows by hand! In November 1925, Albert and Sarah moved to Devils Lake with their six youngest children. Their daughter Irene and her husband Leon took over the operation of the farm. Sara passed away August 4, 1941, and Albert died May 23, 1945. They and their children, Lena and Albert Jr., are buried in the Devils Lake Cemetery.
